I'm a big fan of historical mystery - and the Scottish Highland setting was wonderfully rich and inviting. Heroine Lady Darby has quite an interesting background history, which is slowly revealed (love that!) through the novel. The mystery is well-plotted and compelling. Lady D's emotion is very believable due to her past, and the interaction with the professional sleuth (and inquiry agent) Sebastian Gage gives plenty of room for future pairings for more mystery solving. Can't wait to read Book 2. There was a positive quote from Deanna Raybourn on the front cover of the book, which I find interesting because this book was extremely reminiscent of the early Lady Julia novels. I would say I didn't like this book quite as much, but close. The "whodunnit" was somewhat predictable and simple, although the details were more complicated, so overall it was solid. I wasn't quite satisfied with the motive or how everything played out though. I will definitely read the next books in the series. I think it has potential.
What do You think about The Anatomist Wife (2012)?
Intriguing story; looking forward to reading others in this series.
