The Anger Of Achilles: The Iliad (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
I see why people are still reading this book 3,200 years later. It's amazing. Beautiful imagery throughout. What's striking is how much nature factors in to similes and metaphors, which makes sense, because there was hardly anything else to compare it to. No Biblical allusions, no comparisons to anything invented past the bronze age, not even a mention of writing except for when someone marks a rock with a single vertical line.The story is fantastic, encompassing a series of battles between the Trojan and Achaeans. The momentum shifts back and forth several times. Then the Gods get involved. The Gods have their own alliances, rivalries, and petty concerns that cause them to interfere with the humans' war.I loved it. It's an entertaining page-turner that's only slightly less violent than a Cormac McCarthy novel. This book was qn my to do list and I decided to finish it before the end of the year. I had read parts but not the entire poem. The immediate impetus was to compare it with the movie. Achilles had to have more to him than Brad Pitt.Well, the hype is justified and the Illiad is a fun read. I read while listening to the audio version. In a nutshell, the Greeks go war with the Trojans over the abduction of Helen ... and then a lot of things happen involving gods and men. I won't spoil the end ... the poem is full of chestnuts - I guess that is why it is a classic. I highly recommend it and will likely revise my rating as I do more mental processing.
