A very readable, clearly written book covering history of the Arabs since the time of Ottoman conquest nearly 500 years ago. If one is looking for information on earlier history of the Arabs; how they emerged and became prominent, their earlier kingdoms and empires, how they were related to ancient Egyptians, etc., it is not in this book. The book makes it clear that the seeds of intractable problems of the present day in the Arab world were largely planted by the colonial powers of the past 150 years, namely Britain and France, and the French colonial rule in North Africa had been the most costly in terms human lives, more than one million lives perished.
What do You think about The Arabs: A History (2009)?
I liked it a lot, a lot of detail beginning with pre-Islamic times.
