The Belial Stone (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I wanted to read this book for a long time. I had it on my wish list and had to finally break down and get it. I was so excited about it, I bought the paperback so I could savor every page. I wasn't as pleased as I thought I would be.There is a lot of action in this book. The first chapter is a doozy. Excellent writing here and it certainly draws the reader in, but after that there was a fight scene on every other page (probably an exaggeration but there was a lot). So if you like action go for it. But in my opinion the story (the reason you read a book) was lost. The synopsis made me think that there was archaeology involved and I was really excited to know that Gobekli Tepe was in it. But I if it was, I can't remember reading anything about it, in fact I can't remember anything but the fight scenes. No story to share with anyone. Such a missed opportunity. All in all it was a good book, made better because it was a well-written debut novel. But I don't think I'll be reading any of the other books in the series. I wanted to like this book because it falls into a category that generally interests me, lost civilizations and technology, but I just can't say that I liked it. It was ok and fast paced enough to keep me reading in the beginning but there is a lag in the middle and by then I couldn't deal with the amount of errors in both grammar and logic. It's also one of those two-people-meet-and-trust-each-other-unquestioningly-in-like-three-minutes kinds of stories and those always set off my BS meter. I give it a 3 out of 5 but I won't read more in this series.

Nicely done! An entertaining read that had the right mix of history, action and science.
