This is probably more of a 2.5 stars. This was a sequel to an earlier book, which I didn't realize when I got the book. That said, it wasn't hard to follow the general plot that had occurred previously. However, I felt this story, though pretty short, still was draggy and kind of thunked you over the head with the story such that I was just feeling "get on with it"! So, not a bad read, but not a great one either. The Best Gift by Wendy MarkhamThis time travel romance is sure to keep you on your toes. Clara can’t stop traveling from the present into the future. In the present, her life appears to be wonderful with a loving husband and baby on the way but in the future, she is lost and alone.Ms. Markham creates an interesting time travel with a twist. Not only are Clara and Drew husband and wife but were meant to be. Clara had met Drew in his previous life when she time traveled back to the past. The secondary characters were very memorable. I loved Dickens and Doris. Each one was so well thought out and unique. My only complaint about the story was the constant switching from the present to the future. It left me (and Clara) confused about what was going on in the story. Ms. Markham uses this technique to keep the reader guessing about whether or not there’s a happily ever after. If you enjoy time travel stories with a twist, you’re going to enjoy The Best Gift.
