The Blacksmith's Son (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Overall, I would say this book is simply an OK read. All the elements of the story are present and seem to have a lot of potential. The problem comes in execution. Things feel rushed, the author tackles character and plot development at warm speed. The first book if roughly 200 pages, in these 200 pages the author covers as much as many established authors would in 1000.Give it a read if you are looking for something to fill your fantasy needs while waiting for the next hit to come around. If you have anything else you are considering reading, give this one a temporary pass. Despite my problems with the book, I do recommend a read at some point, just not before many better works. This is a surprisingly good book.I'd never heard of the author or series. Came up as a Goodreads recommendation so I gave it a shot. It's not deep but it is fun and funny. It's not epic so there's a small cast of characters that you don't need a spreadsheet to keep track of and the plot, though a bit clunky at first, flows smoothly from start to finish. It's the standard lost child last in the line of blah blah kinda story but it puts on no airs of deep drama or high fantasy, just tells an enjoyable story with a good mix of drama and wit from the narrator. It's not a full on 4 but with no half marks, this is definitely not a 3.

What do You think about The Blacksmith's Son (2000)?

There's little original in this book. The magic system is standard. The hero's personality is standard. The plot is even standard. The writing is fun, but not impressive. And if you aren't a fan of the classic fantasy story of a boy discovering he has powers and that he's really the son of a Lord, then you won't think much of this book. As it happens, that's one of my favorite tropes. So I enjoyed this story. (It's kind of like how most romantic comedies have the same plot, but people watch them anyway.)I'm curious where the series will go now that the stereotypical plot points have been covered.

I absolutely loved this book. I enjoyed this book not only due to the adventure and fantasy but also because of the romance behind it. The plot and character development was outstanding. I found myself heavily attached to the characters. Overall this book put me on the edge of my seat. I hated having to put it down for the smallest things. My father had to take the Kindle I was reading it off of so I would come out of my room and interact with the family. I would not mind reading this book multiple times.
