The Book That Eats People (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
We originally got this book from the library, and I wasn't sure what the boys (4 and 2 at the time) would think - it's definitely a little gruesome ("his bones clattered across the floor like wooden blocks"), but both boys REVELED in the fine line between scary and silly that this book does so delightfully well. We ended up buying our own copy after renewing it twice, and it's still a favorite. It's very fun to read aloud, and the illustrations are great, which means I haven't gotten tired of it either even after reading it over and over (and over and over and over). I've loved this book since our library got a copy, and I recommend it to everybody I can. I finally got a chance to read it to my three-year-old niece, and she loved it too. She immediately called her mom in to tell her about it, and she enthusiastically listened again the next day. I'm going to have to buy her a copy, because she asked if she could take it to her Nana's, and that isn't a good idea with library books.
