The Bum Magnet (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

The Bum Magnet by K. L. Brady Never in all my years of reading, have I read a book that made me laugh out loud as many times as THE BUM MAGNET. My kids were looking at me like I was crazy but I couldn't help it. (Birth control pajamas - just about all of us have a pair of them.) Charisse Tyson has a successful career, a beautiful home and a bad-ass ride. On the outside looking in, she appears to have everything - everything but love. Meeting men isn't a problem for someone as charismatic as Charisse. But for some strange reason, her magnetic personality seems to attract sexy, super fine, muscular, charming - NO GOOD BUMS! Toward the middle of the book, Charisse's bum stories were beginning to overwhelm me. I mean, who picks that many bums? Answer - Charisse, that's who. Captivated, I flipped the page and there was my "ah ha" moment for this particular bum brings about a change in Charisse's life. Is it for the better? You'll have to read the book to see. Even though I knew how this book would end, the predictability wasn't a turn off. It's what the advange reader is hoping for. The ending will make you cheer for Charisse and sing praises to K. L. Brady`s THE BUM MAGNET. Love this book. In fact, I just referenced it in my sequel.... Charisse in the Bum Magnet holds too much attitude in the beginning, and her attempts at humor backfired. She comes across like she wanted me to love her and find her funny. But she adopts a more light-handed tone. After taking a magazine quiz, Charisse decides to forgo romance until she figures herself out and why she keeps falling for bums, but that resolution only lasts about a day. She meets another hottie, old flames return, a mysterious stranger keeps popping up and that's where chaos ensues.I'm not a fan of flashbacks generally, but this book takes us into her past failures, and in her past is where she emerges as more human and identifiable. Everyone can relate with wanting to find love or happiness, and only ending up with heartbreak and disappointment instead. And in her present-day attempts to discern the roses from the weeds, even readers are made to wonder is this Mr. Does-It-All really Mr. Perfect? Or is that other Mr. Smiley him? Charisse has been burned many times over by guys who seemed amazing and wonderful, so we're put right in her shoes and are just as confused and uncertain as she.I can't recall in recent times a book that features this much character growth and self-discovery. Charisse must make peace with her traumatic past and her failures before she can ever hope to find true love. As the story goes along, she becomes more and more likable, and by the end, I was tearing up in several places and hoping she'd finally catch a winner. This book starts off a bit rocky due to the character's bristle and foolishness, but if you give the Bum Magnet a chance, you'll see where the bad decisions and grit come from and maybe find, as I did, that Charisse is a character worth rooting for and that any heart can be broken, no matter how thick its walls.
