The Color Of Water In July (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Some people who have reviewed this book claim that they were confused by the time/voice changes. Personally, I thought they were pretty clear (Jess age 17, Mamie, to begin each chapter). There were briefly confusing/mysterious sections, but they were made clear in time. I was befuddled by Lila's 'jellyfish', only to feel slightly stupid a bit later when I realized the truth. It is always nice when an author genuinely throws natural curveballs. I stayed up too late more than one night, and read the whole book prett quickly! Family secrets and pride can just mess with people's lives!!! The book goes back and forth between present day and the 1920-30's as Jess debates whether to sell her families house, an icon in the community. While in the past, we learn of the family history--who married whom, why so-and-so hates so-and-so, how the teenagers entertained themselves, etc. but we also learn where the secrets started and why. While in present, Jess is remembering what it was like to grow up in the house and community, her first real love and heart break, her mom never being around and being cared for by her grandmother. Through dome old letters found in grandma's writing desk, Jess also discovers the truth about the lies that started when grandma was a teenager. Lies and secrets!! Ugh!
