I listened to this audio book when I was doing a lot of daily driving. The story was good but so heartbreaking!! I grew attached to Calla through the southern charm of the audiobook reader and Wells' writing style. Just when I thought things were starting to get better, she suffered another loss or blow in life. And even though she is a very strong character... I was heartbroken just the same. Not once... not Twice... at least three times!!! After spending so many hours listening I felt more depressed than hopeful and I'd rather not be sad. That said the story was well told and the characters truly came to life through the audio telling. Not for romantics and those who want to avoid a heavy heart may want to pass on this one. I really tried to like this book, but feel gypped honestly. The characters were one dimensional and whole story lines could have been deleted (Sukey's drunken phase & the whole Cleveland/skate rink thing) & none would be any wiser. I found it entirely too predictable & the writing style really dropped off after the death of M'Dear. I liked the first 100 pages or so, but then it continually declined from there & never recovered.
Really enjoyed this book. Look Rebecca Well's writing and I felt the characters were very engaging.

Gimmicky. Sappy. One-dimensional.

A bit too saccharine for me.
