The Crystal Skull (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Not as edgy as her other stand alone novel but still a fun read. The book was split between the present and the other main character in the 1500's. The story really started with a bang but then slowed down considerably - at least in the sections in the present time. Which is too bad - so much more could have been done with her character and some of the plot. But where the author shined was in the story of the character in the 1500's. Anyway it was good read, not her best but also a 2012 inspired story where I enjoyed the topic rather than being alarmist we are all going to die story. I really shouldn't have read a book that begins with a hair raising account of a caving expedition the week before I'm booked on a cave tour. But I did and I was captivated from the first page by this book. I constantly turned a few pages ahead to find out what would happen next and hated to put the book down to go to bed at night. It's an exciting read that put vivid images in my mind of the places, people and the action. The book moves well from present day to the 16th century and captures the essence of both. Even though I knew that many of the places and people were fictional I could still believe in them as I read. I wasn't familiar with crystal skulls or Mayan legends and beliefs about the End Times so the premise of the book was totally new to me and I enjoyed learning about both.I loved the mix of fantasy and history and would recommend this novel unreservedly.
