The Dark Light (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Wow, what to say about The Dark Light by Sara Walsh? I'll start with the characters. I think Mia was a joy to read. I could very well relate to her in the sense that she always has this wall or barrier around her that separates her from forming new relationships with others. I think she was very well written with no annoying personality traits to her. She has developed through the book emotionally and mentally, with making her own decisions and coming to face the reality of who she is. I think she was an excellent protagonist in this book. Sol or Solandun. What could I say about this hunk of a guy? Well, to be honest I wasn't really interested in him in the beginning because of his mysterious attitude and physical appearance. It was all a very tiring act to always read about his muscles and overbearing body. But through the book, I got to know him and his very caring, sincere, playful attitude and he was just mind blowing. From his relationship to the king and to his gorgeous eagle wings, Sol was very surprising. I wish I got to see more of Mia and his relationship grow. Uh, Andy, I thought was a useless character now that I finished the book. You only hear about him in the beginning and then never hear from him again. Delane, very interesting character in the book. I think he was an important character because of his carefree and funny personality. It made the mood light in times. Vermillion, very interesting character. With her shape shifting power to her stunning good looks. I really liked her character a lot. Bromasta. Very funky name. I think his story of protecting his kids was very valiant and surprising because I was sure he wasn't going to be in this book, but I'm glad Mia got to see him and know of her family's history. Okay on to the actual plot! Let's start with the beginning. Okay, so from reading the description of the book and the beginning, I thought oh a simple non action normal book. I had my doubts of reading this, thinking it was going to be boring and a little unsatisfying for my taste. Boy was I wrong! From beginning to end this book was a roller coaster of tear jerkers, heart pounding romance, gripping action, and unforgettable adventure! The story started out normal. A girl dealing with normal problems of boys, prom, family and more. Things started to get heated when the new boy comes to the small town and shakes everything up. Jay gets taken, Sol lies about the light, Mia sets out to find the truth. That's when everything changes. I never though this book would take place in another world. I thought it would just be Mia trying to find her brother with her new love Sol around her small town. But it was completely different! I loved all the adventures they had and the journey it took them on. I feel like Walsh could've put more love scenes and chemistry between the two, but they were still cute regardless. Towards the end, Walsh threw us with endless twists and turns! That Sol is the kinds son, Bromasta revealing that Mia is the owner of the necklace, that if it gets destroyed she dies, etc etc. I do believe at the end though, it got a little sloppy. They left Orion without any trouble and even got the boys out of their cells without a key. So that was a little too easy. Same with the "big boss fight". I was so scared when Elias appeared and starting to burn her father. I was so sure he was going to die right in front of them. Good thing he didn't and was saved by Mia and her necklace. I thought Elias was going to die for good but I guess not. He's still out there, meaning he has to be stopped. I did get a little emotional when I found out that Jay will be staying with his father in Brakaland. I mean that's all he ever wanted in life right? To be with his parents. :,) And not to mention that Sol will be staying with Mia in Crownsville! I was beyond happy about that because I was sure he was going to leave her to fight in the West. Because of that I'm giving it full five stars because I love a sappy romance. When I heard there wasn't a plan for a sequel, I was speechless! This seems like a perfect book to have a sequel because of how it ended and how Elias is still out there! I am hoping and wishing for a sequel in the future! But other than that, I am so so so happy with how it ended, with Mia and Sol being together and the kids back safely in their homes. I would love to see Mia grow with her new teacher, Pete and how Elias will be stopped, so til' next time hopefully? :D Crossing my fingers very tightly! 5/5 stars. Rating: 3.5 starsI was deceived by the bookcover. I thought this book was about angels because of the guy's tattoo on his back. I was totally wrong. It was about a dimension underneath Crownsville, Nebraska. The mystery started well. Then, it stalled, and the pace picked up again almost at the end of the book. The concept of the story was great. I just didn't like the excessive elaborative detail of the scenes. I felt like I was reading a textbook. It overloaded my brain and the thrill of reading had vanished.
