The Dark Rival (1999) - Plot & Excerpts

Following the events of Rising Force , the second installment in the Let's-Learn-about-Cutiepie-Baby-Obi Jedi Apprentice series digs deeper into the relationship between Obi-Wan and his soon to be master Qui-Gon Jinn, in an evocative, efficient way. The plot may be rather more predictable this time around - and the secondary characters less interesting - but our two protagonists remain well rounded, faithful to their cinematic characterisations and, as always, very emotionally compelling. Xanatos and his history with Qui-Gon is a welcome addition, making him a fascinating villain despite his simplistic goals of vengeance (yes, we've never seen that before in star wars!). While being a junior novel, Dark Rival very much holds up and is enjoyable and intriguing, with good characters and emotion, without forgetting the über clever and perfect analogy of the Broken Circle. However, I will be more than happy to leave the mining facilities of Bandomeer behind in the next book.

What do You think about The Dark Rival (1999)?

Wonderful continuation as Qui-Gon begins to let go of the past and accept that his future is one that is linked to Obi-Wan. Highly recommend not only this book, but this entire series. Great background for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's Master/Padawan relationship. Even though these are 'kids' books, they are filled with enough action/adventure to keep adults entertained as well.(Spoiler Warning)Obi-Wan meets Qui-Gon's previous Padawan. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are forced to work together to stop Xantos from destroying Bandomeer.

I was excited when I picked up this tale of young Obi-Wan Kenobi, since we know so little of his past. I was unable to find the first in the series, but I didn't think starting with the second would be a problem -- and it wasn't, in terms of being able to follow the story.Unfortunately, the writing was really lackluster. I found it difficult to care about the characters and the story never really gripped me, and I really think it had to do with the rhythm of the prose -- all short declarative sentences, as if it had been written for a very young age group. The odd thing is that I didn't notice this in another book I read by the same author. But for some reason, it really stood out for me in this book.
