The Day We Met: A Novel (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Wanted to like this more than I actually did. Interesting story of 3 generations of women, the middle generation - Claire, suffering from early onset Alzheimer's. We piece together her story from her narrative as well as daughter and mother. The family relationships are handled very deftly and with great insight but somehow there didn't seem to be the necessary substance to the book. I enjoyed "Still Alice" by Lisa Genova (with the same theme) far more, despite it being an American and this a British book. The story of a family dealing with Alzheimer's and how they all deal with it.Written with great tenderness this book took me through pages of heartbreaking emotions, tears of sadness, tears of joy and also some laughter. It's warm, sad and life affirming with an unforgettable heroine. It'll make your heart sore at the strength of human spirit and show you how capable people are of true, selfless love. An unforgettable courageous story that will stay with me much longer in my thoughts, shows you how we should treasure the past and live life to the full. You'll want to go and hug your nearest and dearest after reading this.My first book from Rowan Coleman but I'll definitely be checking out her other books.
