The Dead And Those About To Die: D-Day: The Big Red One At Omaha Beach (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I learned a lot from this book, but it took me forever to get through. The work and research that went into it were very clear. I just had a hard time keeping track of all the people, places and details. It was not so much a story as it was a collection of numerous eyewitness accounts which collectively told a story. Of course, that was the point: D-Day was a jumble of confusion. I was shocked to learn how poorly-planned and disorganized was the whole invasion. I had the pleasure of meeting a D-Day veteran who fought in the Big Red One and it was he who sparked my interest in the subject. Prior to talking to him, I had no idea how much they hated General Patton and the U.S. Navy and pretty much ANYBODY who did not wear that red patch on their sleeve. This book makes the reasons quite clear. This book provides the reader with a picture of the events and time line of the invasion of Omaha Beach. The author gathered the facts from documented military reports, interviews from soldiers, letters to loved ones and many other contributors. I have a great respect for all that fought and died on that bloody beach that day and now after reading this book can only recommend it to anyone interested in reading about how these young men secured our freedom.
