The Drifting (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Three words: Drama, drama, DRAMA. UGH. It was terrible! Maybe it was just because I had such high expectations after completely LOVING the first book. But I made it 40% of the way through this second book before I actually found myself skimming 10% of the book. I started to enjoy it again, but no-- more ridiculous drama hit and I was skimming again. I'm just so disappointed because I loved the first book so much :(This is a rant so yeah, *SPOILER ALERT*The parts between Tharin & Lily were horribly disappointing to put it lightly, and I cannot STAND it when 99.99% of the conflict in a relationship is based on........ NOT COMMUNICATING. God! Tharin was planning on talking to Lily about everything going on once they reached safety but no- she got kidnapped. BUT WAIT, it was actually an orchestrated abduction for her own safety and just like that they can't see each other at all for three weeks. Lily spends the first half of the book being a whiny, insecure, STUPID heroine honestly believing that Tharin who hasn't talked about his ex girlfriend AT ALL since meeting her, was really just stringing her along. Tharin is so devastatingly sweet and tender towards her? She thinks, "Oh no he's in love with Kalis" and whines again. And Tharin was going to come clean with her about what all happened between him and Kalis? LOL when they FINALLY get the chance to talk about it, he makes some completely inappropriate comment to Lily AND THEY DO NOT TALK AT ALL. DRAMA.DRAMAAND MORE DRAMA.And then they share their first real kiss AND IT WAS SO GREAT (I mean it, really). It was so awesome that Lily decides she's going to go find Tharin after they're separated because she wanted to see him again. BUT WAITThese two All-Powerful new characters need everyone to believe that Lily is dead so they order Tharin to basically lead Kalis on so no one will suspect that Lily is alive. *HEADDESK* SO THEN Lily finds Tharin after their kiss JUST AS HE IS GIVING KALIS A HUG. Aaaand she's back to being a whiny, stupid heroine with no common sense. "Oh boo hoo he is in love with Kalis" blah blah blah.FOR LIKE THE FIRST HALF OF THE BOOK.And then things were good for a while. Tharin finally came clean about how he isn't in love with Kalis anymore and how he is in love with her and all is right in the world. And then this stupid demon bad guy basically drugs Tharin and Kalis, makes them get in bed naked together and orchestrates it so Lily will walk in on them lying in bed together. Of course she does. SHE FREAKS OUT and starts throwing stuff and Tharin tries to explain that he was drugged and it wasn't real and LILY WAS BEING SO FREAKING STUPID.A heroine that's TSTL? That's right. And she pitches her stupid temper tantrum for the rest of the book, treating Tharin like shit even though that same night she walked in on Tharin & Kalis she sensed someone VERY EVIL lurking around her room. HELLO, LILY? ANYONE HOME?And what kind of man does she honestly take Tharin for? Good god she was being childish and ridiculous and I wanted to slap her for most of this book. Tharin deserves better than a girl who is constantly jumping to the worst conclusions with him, who thinks him just a heartless player (when he has proven otherwise TIME AND TIME AGAIN). And then in the end, when all hell breaks loose and Tharin ends up losing so many people he cared about, Lily is being a stubborn bitch and instead of getting a nice Tharin & Lily payoff in the end after putting up with all this nonsense from them, she runs off to find her best friend while Tharin needed her.And as I said, I skimmed through a lot of this book, so I don't have much else to say about the plot other than most of the side characters are amazing as they were in book 1. And I suppose I might as well just finish this trilogy in hopes that book 3 won't be such a freaking letdown. Book #2 majorly suffered from "sequel-syndrome" whereby the two main leads: Tharin and Lily, remain apart throughout the majority of the book, with an ensuing semi-love-triangle, a myriad of misunderstandings, and a fresh batch of new characters thrown into the mix, to boot. Still, in all its second book predictability, I did find myself laughing along, and biting my nails in eager anticipation. However, I was a bit disappointed with Tharin and how he handled Kalis - but then again, he IS Crown Prince after all. *rolls eyes* Either way, I enjoyed the magical blend of romance, mystery, adventure, and action as Lily finally learns of heritage, and realizes her powers. The side drama was also entertaining as well. I am looking forward to reading the third book!
