The Epigenetics Revolution (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
A very interesting read. It's a great general knowledge book, especially for those interested in genetics and development, however at times it does get very deeply technical. There were segments I simply couldn't fully follow regardless of how many times I re-read them, and the book does raise more questions than it answers. Nevertheless, it's a thought provoking book that delves a level deeper into how we become who we are. Before reading this book, all I knew about epigenetic was 'environment X genes' - that, was the extent of my knowledge. As I progressed through the book, I fell into a reverie. Nessa Carey had introduced me to a whole new world. A world filled with excitement, disappointment, hope and persistence; the world of epigenetic. Carey has successfully demonstrated why the field of epigenetic is revolutionary by referencing past and current research; how important are these findings for the scientific community in understanding development of diseases such as cancer and environmental influences on psychological illnesses such as depression & schizophrenia. Anyone with a bit of preliminary knowledge of biology can easily understand the concepts discussed in this book.
