The Essential Guide To Getting Your Book Published: How To Write It, Sell It, And Market It . . . Successfully (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a nuts and bolts book on getting published, filled with a ton of valuable nuggets of info. The husband and wife team are both authors and entrepreneurs--they come well prepared. I learned about how publishing has changed since the advent of the Internet and social networking. Very snappy writing. I love how it is filled with bite-size sidebars--success stories of everyday Joes like me, wanting to break into fiction writing. Even though the current state of publishing is a runaway chariot helmed by drunken marmots, there's a lot to like in this book. The reason I bring up the state of publishing first is that no book can keep up with the developments (technical, marketing and otherwise) in traditional publishing, self-publishing, hybrid publishing and all its variants. But this guide is current enough in addressing newer issues of platform development, POD and social media, as well as sound overviews of hoary entities like book proposals. There's more here than mere bare fundamentals in the addressing of issues like the need for agents and how to find them, the benefits of self-publishing and the considerable constraints therein (mostly on you being the writer/formatter/marketer and official document stapler). Lots of good stuff on working with publishers and getting your book into more than just the conventional markets—and getting your book out of yourself and into ANY market. I saw the authors speak at a pitch-session, and they were as amusing in person as they are in the book, which is pretty durn amusing. Go thee and publish!
