The Fall Of The House Of Zeus: The Rise And Ruin Of America's Most Powerful Trial Lawyer (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Being a Mississippian who watched this play out in the news, this was a must-read for me. Unfortunately, it left me with as many questions as answers, and was, frankly, very unsettling. This is far from the black and white story portrayed in the media, of a crime uncovered and prosecuted and wrapped up neatly. There is no sense of justice served in the end. That being said, I absolutely do not condone any illegal actions taken by any of the participants and feel that they should be justly punished for any wrongdoing, but it's hard to believe that was accomplished. There were far more sinister characters than Scruggs who seemed to emerge from this debacle with no consequences, but even more troubling than that was the actions of the investigators and prosecutors in this case. But, perhaps most troubling of all is the good-old-boy network and backroom dealings that were going on long before this and still continue on without pause. I think this should be a must-read for everyone, if for no other reason than to gain insight into the way the world really works behind the scenes. Well done account by an author intimately familiar with all of the players and life in upper crust Mississippi. As an honest lawyer and knowing many many other hard working, honest and dedicated lawyers it was good to see these elitist, privileged lawyers go to jail. Their money came from a corrupt political system that they further corrupted and the corruption was both democrat and republican, conservative and liberal.
