The Feminist And The Cowboy: An Unlikely Love Story (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Such a promising title....such a tremendous let down. This book had me tearing my hair out for a million reasons. The whole post-post-feminist slant (it takes a Fox-watching, abusive cowboy to tame a liberal, hot-blooded Latino), is such a tired cliche that I can't believe a major publishing house bought this book. Then again, "Keeping up with the Kardashians" is one of the most popular TV shows, so what do I know?Did an editor even glance at the final copy? Paragraphs repeat paragraphs; there is so much rehashing of the same drivel that by page 30 I still felt like I was on page 3.But the worst of the book is the dark subtext: that an abusive relationship is worth staying in, especially is there's great sex involved. Yeah, it's that simple a take away message. I can't believe any woman with an ounce of self-respect wouldn't put this book down halfway through (I did!).Hey, if you want to read about abusive relationships, download 50 Shades of Humiliation.Skip this horrible book unless you get off on reading about trainwreck relationships. I love the way Alisa writes. Yes, there were times when I wondered what she was thinking but then I put myself in her situation and I remembered that there were times in my life when I too made relationship mistakes. I just wasn't a public figure who had it out there for the world to see and chastise.I found the book thought provoking and often found myself thinking about how I would have handled myself in her situation or trying to will things to turn out differently. I'm not like others who are crucifying Alisa for putting herself out there, I think it's great that she went out on a limb and although I know her relationship ended (I'm thankful it did and I knew this when I bought the book of course) I'm glad she has found someone else who makes her happy.
