The First Annual Grand Prairie (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
I didn't not like this book, but I don't particularly think it's reread worthy either. Father Steve Sibille is a Catholic Priest in a small church in Louisiana. You have a lot of the typical cajun crowd characters and catholic priest challenges, but the story itself I found somewhat boring. While Father Sibille has women problems, and church problems, and alcholic tendency problems, I never really understood why he ever became a priest. It felt like my book was missing chapters or something, because that aha moment never arrived. Don't get me wrong, the secondary characters made this book worthy of turning the pages. Mark, Vicky, Miss Rita and a host of characters supporting the Rabbit Festival are all fun and interesting, but Father Steve ... not so much. I'd never reread this book so I hesitate to say I recommend it. A lot of people would find this story very upsetting. Since it deals with religion and taboo subjects. I had to laugh at it as it is occurring in the world, yet everyone seems to turn the other cheek. It is perspective from the drunken priest who doesn't know if he should remain a priest or not. A gay priest who leaves the priesthood, and a pastor that is trying to hide his gay son's lifestyle by being the evangelist. I thought it was pretty realistic and I chuckled a lot.
