While it's not essential to the second novel in this series, it works well as an additional chapter. Note that it is not a novella, but rather a short story about how Persis was first inspired to start rescuing Galateans. I wish it had been longer, as the prequel to "For Darkness Shows the Stars" was. Some of the little details about life in New Pacifa are quite interesting and sadly unexplored in the book and short story. As I am a huge fan of For Darkness Shows the Stars and also the prequel. I thought I would read this before reading Across the Star Swept Sea. Word of advice do not read before. A prequel is not suppose to have you all confused but this did. So I am going to give another review after I have read Across the Star Swept Sea and see how I changed my mind. So I am leaving it at 3 stars for now. As always though author Peterfreund's writing is beautiful!
Everything I already knew from reading the second book. Guess I should've read this one beforehand.
