Perfect graphic novel for early readers! I found this one in the school library the other day and thought Aidan might like it. Well I was wrong.... he LOVED it and was instantly obsessed with this one and the sequel "The Flying Beaver Brothers and the Evil Fish". This is a great early reader or reluctant reader book as the dialogue is spare and the plot is simple. There are also many panels with just illustrations. This is a silly book but with some humor that will appeal to adults. (Two of the penguins are Bob and his associate Bob... sound familiar?) Aidan got a HUGE kick out of a homonym play on the word "blueprints". You will have to read it to see! Probably best for grades 1 - 4 and will probably mostly appeal to boys who enjoy other graphic novels like Squish or The Lunch Lady series. Despite a somewhat exciting story and likeable art, I was un-blown-away by this one. I did finish it, because the story was engaging enough, but I couldn't tell the main characters apart despite their different swim trunks which I think really cut down on the book's potential. I didn't really catch the sleepy one's name either since his brother calls him Bub and the bully calls him Flub- kind of confusing. Even though thecharacters aren't distinguishable form each other, the art is fun with a single color and nice clear drawings with minimal setting that I prefer.
So funny! And so punny!I want to read more of these.C'mon library, get them in!
