The Happy Medium: A Novel (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Fun, quirky book. Hannah loses her husband to a freak bike accident, leaving her and her 3-year-old daughter at loose ends. Her husband was more like the mommy than she was and she feels ill-equipped to take care of her daughter. She begins having conversations with dead people ("I see dead people") but thinks she's going crazy. She is surrounded by a weird group of friends, all who want to help her move on. One of those books that you think about for days after finishing it. If you never missed an episode of "Sex and The City", this book may be for you. If you'd rather purchase People magazine than groceries, this book may be for you. And if you don't mind the formula of "heroine who loses someone, has two neurotic girlfriends and one gay stereotype of a male friend" (think Bridget Jones Diary), this book may be for you. There were bits of the book which were witty, but in general, it was woven around shallow characters that I wanted to throttle. And enough with the popular culture references. Three stars for a lovely bookcover and resolving the murder mystery in a satisfactory manner.
