The Hotel On Place Vendome: Life, Death, And Betrayal At The Hotel Ritz In Paris (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Fascinating read about the Ritz Hotel since it's inception in 1898 up to the death of Princess Di in 1997, while leaving the hotel. Most of the story takes place during World War II and occupation of Germany. It's a who's who story of all the characters who lived there including Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel and Wilhelm Goring. All the little dirty details of their lives are exposed, and it was hard to put down. I want to go back and reread a Ernest Hemingway bio in light of this new information. I am also going to add A Moveable Feast to my want to read list. If the walls of the Ritz Paris could talk, this book is filled with what they would say. It paints a fascinating portrait of the grand hotel through during Paris' golden age, through the Nazi occupation, right up to the last days of the Second World War. Filled with larger than life personalities, intrigue, romance, betrayal and even murder, this book was a captivating read. The only thing that could have made it better, frankly, would have been more historical photographs. There is one carefully chosen image per chapter, and this left me hungry for more.
