Pretty good little ghost story with a fairly predictable ending but I think there is enough mystery to keep fans of pure ghost stories interested. A lot of legend and historical verses with clues, some with old fashioned language, so reluctant readers might have a tougher time with this one. But the conversations between the brother & sister, dad and the rest of the staff at Minerva are current enough to follow the story. Grades 6 & up. This exciting book combines ancient prophecy and modern life as Jim discovers the fate of six children who died untimely deaths, and struggles against the disbelief and disappointment of his family to protect the seventh child. The premise is that Jim's father is head gardener in an estate that is open to tourists during the day and haunted by spirits that only Jim can see. Every thirty years at midnight on the night of the summer solstice a child will die because of something that the cruel and wealthy Minerva family has done. What makes this book extra creepy is that many of Jim's experiences are based on the author's life.
