She’d met his kiss with a hunger she never experienced before, would have given him her body without hesitation. Perhaps he truly found her repugnant but felt as if he had no say in what happened to him. The thought filled her with horror. Was the Guild of Isis, and her mother in particular, so heartless as to force him into sex? Oh gods, and she was no better, throwing herself at him as she had. “I am sorry for my behavior,” she said. “It will not happen again. I promise you.” He scowled at her as if she were a bug to be squashed beneath his heel. “Why would you apologize for things you take freely?”
