The Less Than Epic Adventures Of TJ And Amal (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
I've been following Big Big Truck (aka E.K. Weaver) since high school (admittedly, to snatch original Cowboy Bebop wallpapers or ogle her magnificent drawings), but at some point it became clear she was in the process of character development. Around this time I managed to fall off the face of the earth with respect to comics and anime, so it took me a while to realize she was publishing her own web comic. Well, I'm all caught up now, and I'll be keeping up from now on (if only in leaps and bounds instead of weekly doses). T.J. and Amal had me so interested I was even reading it on my shitty phone while riding public transit. It's a story about dealing with the harsh judgement of family and tradition while finding love and companionship. An unlikely match, these two embark on a cross country adventure while running into one memorable episode (some naughty, some nice) after another. Weaver also has a unique sense of pacing and meshes each chapter with some type of musical reference. If you don't get them, she has am online numerical chapter index to catch you up on the details. I've read this up to date and really like it!I enjoyed the cross country trip, some panels being just moving scenery or a look in the car, but lots of emotion can be conveyed in these seemingly innocuous drawings.I really felt the emotions in the intimate scenes or where Amal was talking about his feelings and worries about his family.I'm not an expert on drawing but these are very good to me, conveying lots with a few pen strokes.
