The Little Beach Street Bakery (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Dit boek van Jenny Colgan gaat over Polly. Polly heeft de afgelopen jaren een goedlopend bedrijf gehad met haar vriend Chris, echter gingen ze failliet en komt de relatie tot een einde. Het gedeelde appartement moet verkocht worden en Polly zal moeten verhuizen. In Mount Polbearne kan Polly een verwaarloosd appartementje huren boven een verlaten bakker. Het is dit of in een vies studentenhuis in de stad. Kerensa, Polly’s beste vriendin, verklaart haar voor gek. Mount Polbearn is namelijk een klein havendorpje dat tijdens vloed afgesloten is van het vaste land. Maar Polly besluit het appartement tijdelijk te huren. Al snel leert ze een leuke groep vissers kennen, krijgt ze bezoek van een Papagaaiduiker (hm.. in het Engels klinkt het een stuk leuker ‘Puffin’) die haar beste vriend wordt en leert ze de vreemde Amerikaan kennen die honing verkoopt op het eiland. Polly houdt er van om te bakken en nu ze toch zonder werk zit, bakt ze er lustig op los. De groep vissers hebben dit al snel door en genieten volop van het versgebakken brood van Polly. Als je zin hebt in een makkelijk boek waar je niet al te veel bij na hoeft te denken dan is Little Beach Street Bakery het ideale boek. Dit was het eerste boek dat ik van Jenny Colgan heb gelezen, maar hier komt vast verandering in. Zeker nu deel twee aangekondigd is. De schrijfstijl van Colgan is gemakkelijk en vlot. Hierdoor lees je dit boek snel uit. De personages waren leuk en hadden een uitgesproken karakter. Het verhaal rond Neil (de Puffin) was echter wel een beetje ongeloofwaardig, maar niet storend aangezien Neil zo schattig was. Al met al een echt ‘feelgood’ boek die je uitleest met een snik en een lach. I bought 'Little Beach Street Bakery' as I was looking for a light, easy read on my Kindle and it definitely didn't disappoint. I found myself being pulled into the story and really caring about the characters - it was sad in places, happy in others and made me laugh out loud more than once. This is a lovely story and has a real feel good factor about it. The main character, Polly, is written about in such a way that you actually begin to care about her and what happens! This was my first Jenny Colgan novel and I could not have picked a better story. This is the kind of feel-good book you can eat up in one sitting, because the characters and the storyline just flow and mould together so well.I loved this book, i was swept away by the story and was smiling most of the way through, Pollys life goes from bad to worse from the breakdown of her long term relationship, no longer able to afford the flat she lived in she has no choice but to move away to a sleepy little village in Cornwall where she knows no one and has to live above an abandoned shop in a run down flat. Trying to make the most of her days since there's not a lot going on in the village she picks up a old hobby she used to love which was baking bread. Soon she has all the locals talking and they all want to sample her baking but not everyone is happy about her hobby, mainly her mean looking landlord who happens to be the local baker. This really is a lovely light read with a touch of romance chucked in too, it had me laughing out loud in places, mainly due to her rescued puffin bird which was so cute and funny and my favorite parts of the book. I would recommend to anyone looking for a bit of light hearted escapism.

A nice easy read , about Polbearne a fictional but realistic Cornish village. Really enjoyable.
