The Lost City Of Z: A Tale Of Deadly Obsession In The Amazon (2005) - Plot & Excerpts

I picked up this book because of the film that will be made about it and I did not regret it. This was a really interesting take on the famed British explorer Col. Percy Fawcett. The story is written from writer David Grann's perspective in an expose fashion. Grann goes into a lot of detail about Fawcett's early expeditions, his friendship with Henry Costin (his assistant on many expeditions), and his final expedition with his son Jack and Jack's best friend Raleigh Rimell. What I enjoyed abut this book is that Grann gave a strong foundation for all the primary characters including Percy's wife Nina who proved to be quite the formidable woman. I was fascinated with all the detail that Grann provided about the Amazon and the creatures within it and it made me excited for the upcoming movie. The Lost City of Z, written by New Yorker columnist David Grann, chronicles his obsession with Victorian explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett. Trained by the Royal Geographical Society in London, Fawcett undertook numerous trips exploring the Amazon basin. Based on pottery fragments and stories, he became convinced there was an enormous lost city he called "Z" somewhere in the Amazon. Aging and nearly destitute, Fawcett is given one more chance to find the city. Traveling only with his son and son's best friend, the three disappear into the jungle, never to be seen again. Numerous attempts to find Fawcett have been made throughout the years, resulting in over 100 casualties.Following new clues in letters Fawcett had written to family, Grann attempts to find Fawcett's trail himself. Switching between Fawcett's story, Grann's attempt and other attempts at finding the city, Grann presents an intriguing look into the Amazon, its residents and lost civilizations.

What do You think about The Lost City Of Z: A Tale Of Deadly Obsession In The Amazon (2005)?

For the second book I read, I decided to pick the nonfiction book, The Lost City of Z, written by David Grann. I choose this book because the title was very interesting and immediately grabbed my attention. This book was about the British explorer, Percy Fawcett, venturing into the Amazon jungle, in search of a civilization through the woods, as he unravels the exploration of the twentieth century. He had to go through day to day troubles, and also include being sick, but he was able to go and do as much as he could. I would definitely recommend this book to many people. The set group that would like this book most, is any person who likes adventurous novels, or mystery novels. I liked, that this book is very descriptive with all the things that happened during the adventure. The thing I disliked about it, is slowly paced it was, there was every little thing happening during the book, as David wrote it, things went by very low, also.

The Lost City of Z chronicles the adventures of Percy Fawcett and his explorations in the Amazon during the first few decades of the 20th century. Fawcett is a bit of a tragic character, but also admirable in his perseverance and ability to deal with the insane number of hardships that he faced. An excellent book that jumps between Fawcett's expedition and the author's attempts to find out what happened. Sherlock Holmes meets Indiana Jones meets HP Lovecraft, if you can imagine that. I read the book in 4 sittings over 3 days. Awesome.
