The Measure Of Katie Calloway (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
Altho is this normally not my type of book to read, I really enjoyed it, staying awake until 5:30 a.m. cuz I was so engrossed in the ending of this book.It is an historic novel set place most of the time in Michigan, sorta near where I live. The book had all the elements of a great story, detail and good character development. This has made me want to read more of Ms. Miller's books. I love when you start reading a book without any expectations and end up really, really liking it!This is a historical fiction Christian novel which takes place in Georgia and Michigan right after the Civil War. Katie Calloway escapes an abusive husband with her 8-year-old brother, Ned. She knows he will follow her so she goes as far away as she can - they ride the train to the end of the line and end up in Michigan. By a stroke of luck she meets Robert Foster her first day there, and he is looking for a cook for his lumber camp. Normally a young woman with a child wouldn't want to go into a lumber camp, but to Katie being hidden away from everyone for seven months seems like an answer to prayer! If only she really were the widow she is pretending to be -- then she would be free to fall in love with the kind Robert Foster. Robert has been blaming himself for his wife's death for five years, but around the pretty new cook he is discovering that he can be happy again.I had never read a story about the Michigan lumber camps and so there was a lot I found really interesting. I thought it was interesting to read about the challenges they faced and about all the different characters who came together to create a successful lumber camp. While there were Christian themes throughout the book, I never felt like it got preachy.Content: Very clean, I don't remember any swearing
