Lucas was staying with Trent for the night. And Mrs. Parker, Sophie’s best friend Riley’s mother, was to pick Sophie up after her piano practice and keep her overnight. Haley only wondered what Marissa would think of their absence – not only the kids’, but hers and Preston’s as well. She didn’t really understand while he was making the plans, why the kids needed to be gone for so long, but she soon got her answer. After a three-hour drive, she finally understood. Unfortunately, it wasn’t even as if they had embarked on a wonderful road trip of sorts; in fact, the ride became ridiculously boring as soon as they left the city and headed through cornfields. It seemed to take a lifetime to reach their destination, but they did reach their destination: a small gravel road. A gravel. Fucking. Road. The pathway was surrounded by nothing but field and distant trees. Where were they? She hadn’t a clue. All that she knew was that her hopes of her and Preston being a short-lived fantasy may soon be realized.
