The Morning Show Murders, A Novel (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
2.5 Really.Yet another book that slipped through the cracks is this one. I didn't know what to expect from Al Roker the writer. As an idea, writing what he knows (morning weather anchor and food) should have played to his strengths. To some degree, it does. However, like with cooking, sometimes we add too many ingredients, make the recipe too complex and ruin the dish. I'm afraid that's what happened here.A great edit, and a few less characters and this could be a really good read. As is, it's only fair. This really is not a bad book! The warm tone of Billy Blessing defines "cozy" perfectly. Although Billy's comfortable, fun and has a sense of humor, the book is not all goodness, light and clumsy antics. There are serious topics including a murderer using the war to cover up a U.S. soldier's slaying; a serial killer who's on a politician's payroll; a scapegoat describing what it feels like to be framed for a crime he didn't commit and how the police assigned to the case were so narrow-minded they refused to listen to what he had to say; and how cruelties can lead to extreme revenge which some people can sympathize with but which the law makes no excuses for. I felt engaged and interested enough to want to read the next in the series.
