Stephanie was certain Drew would have mentioned it if he thought she’d be coming around. Stephanie looked at the duster in her hand, her ratty blue T-shirt, gray sweatpants and purple toe socks, and then—last but definitely not least—the toys the twins had strewn from one end of the living room to the other. There was no possible way to hide any of that. She groaned inwardly, hoping her distress didn’t show on her face. Never let the enemy see you sweat, and all that. At least she’d put Quincy in the backyard. Otherwise the case worker might have had the kind of welcome she herself had had the first time she’d visited the Spencers. That particular meeting might not have gone as well with this woman as it had with her. Who knew if the investigator liked dogs or not? This was Drew’s worst nightmare come to life.
