The Next Accident (2015) - Plot & Excerpts

4 STARS""What do you do when a killer targets the people you love most? How do you protect them when he knows their most secret fears and hidden desires? When he knows just when to strike? And, most of all, when he knows the same about you? These are the questions that haunt FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy. The official police report concluded that his daughter's death was an accident. Amanda Quincy was driving drunk when her car careened out of control. Pierce knew about his daughter's problem with alcohol. He knew about her loneliness and insecurity. And so, he is certain, did the man who killed her. Quincy is prepared to risk everything to learn the dangerous truth about Amanda's death--and there's only one person willing to help. Rainie Conner knows all too well the dark side of the human heart. An ex-cop haunted by her own violent past, she had once been paired professionally--and personally--with the brilliant, supremely logical FBI profiler. Quincy had helped Rainie through the harrowing case that shattered her career and left her charged with first-degree murder. Now it's time for Rainie to return the favor. But this killer is like none these two hard-boiled pros have ever encountered. This twisted psychopath has an insatiable hunger for revenge...and for fear. He isn't satisfied with taking his victim's lives. He wants to get inside their minds, strip them of every defense, render them powerless to resist. He's already killed twice; now he's taunting Quincy and Rainie by making it no secret who his next victim will be: Quincy's only surviving daughter. The killer's plan is chilling, brilliant, and unstoppable. The cops won't help; the FBI can't be trusted. As the clock ticks down to the final minutes of one unspeakable intimate act of vengeance, the only way Rainie can unmask this faceless killer is to step directly in his murderous path. She will become a murder waiting to happen. She will be...the next accident." (From Amazon)I really enjoyed this novel! I enjoy the banter and sparks of Quincy and Rainie as it is realistic and make you like the characters more. The plot penned by Gardner is great as always.

The one major problem I keep encountering with Lisa Gardner is that the books are so good that you want to hurry up and read them, and then when they're over, you're stuck wishing you had taken your time. This was another spot on read for me as I took every opportunity I could to read it.I am so glad this book went where it did as in the last book they touched briefly on Amanda's accident, and I was so interested in that and really wanted to learn more, so when I read that this book was about investigating that accident, I quickly made it my next 'to-read' book. Not only did I enjoy the actual investigation part, but I loved learning about the Quincy family - even if many of them didn't make it. And I love Rainie and Quincy together. I might even like their books more than the DD Warren series, which is sad as it seems the books from here on out are about Kimberly instead.Either way, another great read with lots to keep you guessing - although I had an inkling as to who did it when Kimberly met with him.

What do You think about The Next Accident (2015)?

FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy is not convinced that his daughter's death was an accident. Quincy knew his daughter had many problems, but he also knew something didn't seem right about her death. Distraught and determined to find the answers, Quincy seeks the help of ex PI, Rainie Connor. Together they hope to uncover what really happened, but could Quincy and those around him be the next targets?Another fantastic read by Lisa Gardner. The twist and turns in this book will have you turning the pages quite quickly and will keep you guessing right to the very end. A fast paced read that will keep you up at night as you won't be able to put down. Highly recommended.

I really enjoy reading Lisa Gardner for pleasure. Her stories are always interesting, fast paced and even though they are somewhat predictable, they make you want to stick with the story just to make sure you were right. This book had a good suspenseful plot but the best part for me was the character development because we finally get to see a softer, more vulnerable side of Quincy instead of the man in the suit. I am also a big fan of Rainie, and was glad to see her take the "heroine" role rather than always the victim. Her sarcasm was a very welcome comic relief to the pretty gruesome murders being described.

For the longest time, I didn't read Lisa Gardner; I had her wrongfully pegged as a romance writer. As she demonstrates in book after book, there's no romance in the murders that she writes about, and if you think you can peg whodunit, guess again. Familiar characters from later novels are central to this psycho-killer tale; FBI agent Pierce Quincy; ex-small town cop Rainie Connor; and Quincy's daughter Kimberly, who wants to follow in her father's footsteps. Gardner begins with a troubled woman, driving drunk with a handsome boyfriend urging her to take the wheel, despite her confusion. Before she can regain any control of her senses, her lover urges her to speed recklessly, knowing she'll do anything for him. A horrific crash eventually ends her life and immediately that of a man walking his dog, but the killer slips out of the car -- beginning a series of accidents that affect Pierce Quincy in the worst ways possible. The killer wants revenge, and he starts his spree by forcing Amanda Quincy, Pierce's oldest and most vulnerable child to drive head-on into a tree.Over a year later, when his ex-wife agrees that Amanda is indeed brain-dead, allowing the young woman to be buried, Quincy hires troubled friend and private eye Rainie Connor to start digging into his daughter's death. Too many loose ends have kept him awake since Amanda's "accident."Quincy is again shocked and outmaneuvered by the murderer, who slowly takes everything and everyone meaningful away from him. Despite his FBI experiences, he realizes it's time to depend on Rainie's smarts, as well as his estranged daughter Kimberly's toughness, to stop a reign of terror.Suspects come and go, but until the final pages, Jackson cleverly disguises who the murderer is and why Quincy is targeted. The clever killer is hard to unmask. Gardner pulls no punches; the characters are imperfect, but real, and the psychology of being terrorized traumatic. Gardner proved early on that she knows how to keep you reading. "The Next Accident" is an enjoyable, and stay-up-all-night read.
