The Oil Jar And Other Stories (1995) - Plot & Excerpts
Pirandello is one of the most famous Sicilian authors (and playwrights) but these stories, although set in Sicily, are not as explicitly Sicilian in character as, for example, are those of Giovanni Verga. They deal with people and their relationships, and particularly with how an individual sees the world subjectively and can never fully understand what is going on in another's head. For example "With other eyes" deals with a young wife's reaction to finding a photo of her husband's first wife and how it changes her perception of him; "A Voice" is about a lover's dread when she suspects her blind love will regain his sight and see her for the first time. "A Character's tragedy" is more whimsical but is interesting as it foreshadows some of the themes of Pirandello's most famous play "Six characters in search of an author".
