Another small eternity passed before she got Sweet Mama and Beulah out of the kitchen where they were whispering over two tall glasses of sweet tea. “It’s time to go,” Sis said. They startled as she walked into the kitchen, their color rising as they reached for their purses and trotted toward the car. The drive to the café was so different from the one home, Sis had the sensation of being whisked back in time. Andy, sitting in the front seat beside her, chattered about seeing his rocket ship while talk of recipes flowed between Sweet Mama and Beulah as naturally as tides responding to the pull of the moon. When Sis neared the café, she saw the regulars lined up outside. The minute she opened the door they streamed in and crowded around. “I was vaguely aware of a siren this morning, but it was so early I thought I might be dreaming,” Miss Opal said. “Then when I got here and found the café closed, I nearly died.”
