I enjoyed this book when I was reading it. Jane Popyncourt is a "Tudor-court" persona that I knew very little about. However, I was quite disappointed when I read the author's notes at the end and realized that one of the most interesting developments in the story was based solely on her imagination and her attempt to explain the mysteries that surrounded Jane. I dislike reading historical fiction that takes such a large step from history. I've been having a hard time figuring out how to rate this book. I thought Jane/Jeanne's voice wasn't quite there and her characterization left things to be desired. There were some strange bodice-ripper moments that didn't quite flow with the rest of the book, that generally felt more educational and bent on informing the reader of various historical elements and practices of the Tudors and their time period.Jane Popyncourt is a mysterious historical figure and I haven't had the opportunity to read much on her, so I appreciated this perspective on what may have been... but I'm not sure I'll be coming back for more.
For a book about deceit, betrayal, intrigue, and illicit affairs, this book seemed remarkably dry.
