"Bookstores suck, why bother reading when you can just click on the link below for my audible link, where you can get your first book free"" Can't wait to steal 8 year olds money for this piece of crap" " maybe I should just add some more inappropriate jokes to make people think I'm funny"" I should totally make people who buy this book check out my youtube channel so I can get more money" If you're going to buy this book just go to tesco and buy this book for £3.85, a far cry from the real value of this book which is probably 20p *This review may contain spoilers*“The Pointless Book” is an activity book, of sorts, for adults, created by Youtube blogger Alfie Deyes. It is an accompaniment to his popular video-diary of challenges and pointless activities, such as; bake a cake in a mug, create a time capsule, draw your week in a storyboard and more.“The Pointless Book” is not a book I would usually pick up. And, being brutally honest, I ordered it thinking it was something else. Not sure what I expected, but it wasn’t what I found myself holding when it arrived. Still, I gave it a good go and I actually found myself really enjoying it. I’ve had the book for, maybe a week and every day I’ve picked it up, flicked through and done another pointless activity. Be that playing the game of squares with a friend or people watching as I drink a latte in Starbucks.I am the sort of reader who hates to deface books. At school when we were urged to write in the margins of our books I couldn’t bring myself to and would write on paper and slot it into the book instead. So the concept of this book should have been abhorrent to me; rip pages out and throw them into the trash can? Make a page as messy as you can? Paint a page with old nail varnish? I should have shuddered. Instead I embraced the book and it is now a torn up, colored in, ripped apart, dog-eared but well-loved book. There were elements to “The Pointless Book” that I felt were not as good and didn’t lend anything to the experience of the book. For me, the games to play with friends was particularly frustrating as the times I picked up the book to complete things, I was generally alone. I also found some challenges to be silly or even ridiculous; seeing how many dry crackers you could fit in your mouth, for one, and making a cocktail out of everything in your fridge and then drinking it! Those pointless activities are still uncompleted. So, truthfully, I’ve not completely finished the book. There is a page to be used as toilet paper in an emergency which will, hopefully, never be used for that purpose. There are a few ‘pointless pages’ to write/draw/do whatever you want on that I’ve not yet done anything with. But right now, I’m done with the book and it’s taken up residence under my bed, to be flicked through again the future, when I need toiler paper, maybe!I’m going to give this book a 2 out of 5 star rating. It scores so low because I do feel that some activities in this book were ridiculous* and, for the majority, not doable. Which took some of the fun out of the book. “The Pointless Book” also scores so low because I didn’t really enjoy it; but that’s because activity books, for adults or otherwise, are not what I’m really interested in and not what I enjoy. As stated, I did enjoy this, more than when I tried “Wreck this Journal” by Keri Smith a few years ago. But not enough to give it a higher rating. It just wasn’t for me. But if you’re a fan of Alfie Deyes and his video blog, or you enjoy defacing books and having a giggle and you like a bit of ridiculousness then this could be the book for you!*I feel it is important to mention that I have never watched a video blog by Alfie Deyes and so maybe the image he has built for himself is one of ridiculous and pointless activities. And I’m all for that, if that’s your kind of thing. But it’s not mine.
What do You think about The Pointless Book (2014)?
