The Power Of Everyday Missionaries (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
What a great book -- I recommend it for every LDS person! For a long time, I've felt intimidated and overwhelmed at the idea of missionary work and at a loss on how to be a member missionary -- until this book. Sure, it still feels a bit scary, but there is so much practical and inspiring advice in this book on how to be an effective missionary all the time. I loved the success stories, too. So glad I came across this book -- it will be one that I revisit often. (Side-note: I listened to the audio version of this book and found it lacking. The reading felt quite automated and boring. Would've appreciated a little more inflection and animation, especially considering the author's clear enthusiasm on the topic.) Christensen demolishes every excuse I have ever used to justify not being a better missionary. He encourages me to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Lord's way rather than man's (wordly) way. And if I don't set deadlines I will not succeed. And if I don't meet those dealines, the Lord will not trust me enough to send me people willing to accept the invitation to learn more about the Gospel. He bluntly challenges the reader to accept the Lord's promised blessings for sharing the Gospel.Best of all, he tells lots of stories, from his own life and the lives of his local fellow saints, that describe how to share the Gospel. His how-to-share stories illustrate that I don't need to know someone well to invite them to learn the Gospel, I can assure others that their response to my invitation to learn more will not affect the relationship we have already, that the missionaries are called to teach the Gospel, that teaching is most effective when answering an investigator's lifelong questions about religion, that investigators need homework assignments to help them learn to pray, learn to read scripture and learn to keep the sabbath day holy. He also tells many stories showing that friends of other faiths are anxious to serve others as disciples of Christ and we can give them opportunities to do so by helping us serve in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Amazing. Every member 12 and over should have their own copy of this book.
