The Power Of Validation: Arming Your Child Against Bullying, Peer Pressure, Addiction, Self-Harm, And Out-Of-Control Emotions - Plot & Excerpts

Sometimes parents get discouraged when they can’t make changes right away. Change is a process. In the interest of helping you be as successful as possible, we’ll first discuss the process of change and how it works. Then we’ll focus on exercises involving the levels of validation you learned in the last chapter. Note that we’ve renamed some the levels identified by Marsha Linehan.
The Process of Change: You Can Do It Parents who learn about validation often find it difficult to put into practice. We think you would agree that changing your behavior is difficult even when it makes sense to do so. Changing how you communicate with your child will mean making a commitment to the new behavior and practicing the new skill repeatedly. Change usually happens not all at once, but in steps. Part of the process is accepting that a new skill takes practice to master and that you will not remember to use the new skill consistently for some time. Be patient with yourself and remember to keep your emotions in check as you are learning.
