The Preacher's Son (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

Living up to your family’s high expectations can be very hard especially when your church family expects more from you tan your original family. In the novel “The Preacher’s Son,” by Carl Weber brother and sister Dante and Donna tried to have a social life but it seemed as if the whole community was watching their every move. Especially since their father, Bishop T.K. Wilson, head of the largest African American church in Queens, New York was running for borough president. Dante’s mother Charlene was against the new woman in her son’s life because Tanisha was from the projects, taking care of her 12-year-old brother, and her mother was a crack addict. On the other hand Dante’s younger sister Donna was hiding her secret relationship with her father’s protégé Terrance. Worst of all, Charlene and the Bishop’s troubled past catches up with them and threatens the Bishop’s chance of becoming president. Throughout the book Dante struggles to get his mother to except his girlfriend as a new member of the family. Donna's what she thought was her "perfect relationship" takes a turn for the worst when Terrance has his own double life. And the Bishop and Charlene struggle to keep their family's personal life from the community for the sake of the election. Will Charlene accept Dante's new boo? What will Donna think of Terrance's other life? Will the Bishop win his election? What's so bad about Charlene and the Bishop's past? You'll have to read the book to find out. I would recommend this book to readers who are afraid to tell their family about decisions they've made in their life. Also to readers who are afraid to live their life because of what others might think. Males and females both might relate to Dante's character because he has trouble trying to persuade his family to accept his new love. The moral of the story is don't judge someone because of where they come from because your past could hold secrets that could tear your "perfect life" apart.

What do You think about The Preacher's Son (2006)?

So, I had some time to mull over this before I sat down to write out my thoughts. In previous reviews of Mr. Weber's books, I mentioned my appreciation for him. There is somewhat of an attachment there because while in college, I really enjoyed delving into his books and thought his style was refreshing. Especially given all the too "urban" novels that seem to dominate the African-American literature genre. While they were enticing reads, at the end of the day, I couldn't relate. THE PREACHER'S SON was in no way a terrible read. I have just come to the realization that my taste in books has matured - quite a bit, actually. This book had all the makings of a great story laced with the right amount of drama, but geez was that drama overdone. I found myself getting drawn to the storylines, but 85% of the time, I would shake my head and think to myself, "seriously?"The story mainly follows the two children of Queens, New York's most esteemed pastor, Bishop T.K. Wilson. Dante and Donna are your ordinary young adults. They're just looking to have a good time, enjoy life and possibly find love along the way. When Bishop Wilson decides to run for borough president, he finds that his chance at winning may be compromised by the sometimes unsavory decisions his children make. As "Preacher's Kids", they're expected to follow a certain path in life, but these two have plans of their own which in turn becomes their parent's worst nightmare. Weber is a master at plot twists. While, the storytelling was mediocre and filled with gaps, I was caught off guard by some of the revelations. The ending however, was a bit extreme and didn't really tie in neatly with the rest of the story. I feel like it was partly added for shock value, which is fine, but then what? It could've worked out better if it was executed differently, and that was my main issue. Definely not Carl Weber's best, which sort of stings. 3 stars.
