What do You think about The Preacher's Son (2006)?
So, I had some time to mull over this before I sat down to write out my thoughts.In previous reviews of Mr. Weber's books, I mentioned my appreciation for him. There is somewhat of an attachment there because while in college, I really enjoyed delving into his books and thought his style was refreshing. Especially given all the too "urban" novels that seem to dominate the African-American literature genre. While they were enticing reads, at the end of the day, I couldn't relate. THE PREACHER'S SON was in no way a terrible read. I have just come to the realization that my taste in books has matured - quite a bit, actually. This book had all the makings of a great story laced with the right amount of drama, but geez was that drama overdone. I found myself getting drawn to the storylines, but 85% of the time, I would shake my head and think to myself, "seriously?"The story mainly follows the two children of Queens, New York's most esteemed pastor, Bishop T.K. Wilson. Dante and Donna are your ordinary young adults. They're just looking to have a good time, enjoy life and possibly find love along the way. When Bishop Wilson decides to run for borough president, he finds that his chance at winning may be compromised by the sometimes unsavory decisions his children make. As "Preacher's Kids", they're expected to follow a certain path in life, but these two have plans of their own which in turn becomes their parent's worst nightmare. Weber is a master at plot twists. While, the storytelling was mediocre and filled with gaps, I was caught off guard by some of the revelations. The ending however, was a bit extreme and didn't really tie in neatly with the rest of the story. I feel like it was partly added for shock value, which is fine, but then what? It could've worked out better if it was executed differently, and that was my main issue. Definely not Carl Weber's best, which sort of stings. 3 stars.
