The Pumpkin Man (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Horror fans deserve better than this. I don't blame the author. In my opinion, this is one round of edits from being a pretty good book. Which is what really frustrates me here. You've got a good, creepy setup, some great horrifying settings, and a plot that moves along at a decent clip, but the characters don't work at all. It's fine to emulate a classic slasher movie, but in those movies, we believe the characters are real people because they are portrayed by actual humans. In a book, you've got to actually create the characters and not just offer up these cardboard cutouts who say things no human would ever say and behave like no humans ever have. I didn't believe in these characters for a second. The guys are essentially not differentiated, there's a big twist that is telegraphed when a character so minor you forgot he even existed shows up, and if you have ever seen a horror movie, you can probably guess what happens to the promiscuous girl. This isn't a meta-satire of the genre like Scream or Cabin in the Woods; it's just a poorly-executed slasher story. I am actually quite annoyed with whoever edited this book, as it seems they just felt it was good enough as it was. Not pushing the author to fix the major issues in what is otherwise a very promising book is a terrible disservice to both the author and readers. Nice, quick, and entertaining read. Perfect for the Halloween season. This novel reminded me of watching a horror movie and that is a pretty great thing in my opinion. I was expecting to be entertained and this book delivered. The book moves at a fast pace and I did enjoy the journal entries and slight historical background of the accursed family. If you're looking to be put in the Halloween mood, like I was, then the pumpkin man will do that for you. Just go into it expecting to have fun and not to find the holy grail of contemporary American literature and you will be satisfied

This was a cheesy B horror movie with some interesting twists and plenty of gore. I had fun with it.
