let me sum this book up.2 gunshots ring out in the only safe place the main cast of characters have found. It's the middle of the night, the time where its dangerous for the crew because they might be eaten like pretty much everyone else they've ever known in their entire lives (not that that really bothers anyone). A former army ranger (everyone's a former army ranger in this book) hears the gunshots and gets out of bed. Instead of having a sense of urgency he takes an extra minute to turn around and say a cutesy cheesey line to the chick he just started talking to 3 days ago before kissing her passionately (but they're SO in love). Does that seem odd? It's pretty par for the course in this book. Completely unbelievable and un-relatable characters at the best of times and downright awful and unlikable characters at the worst. Yes lets constantly stop in the middle of a disaster zone so we can crack a joke, talk about a crush on some other survivor we just met, etc etc etc. Where are our friends? Oh theyre dead but we have these TOTALLY cute SWAT guys now so thats okay. Family too, who cares!?Comeon. this book is a cheap romance novel dolled up to be some kind of end of the world survival novel. Seriously awful. I'm utterly puzzled at the top reviews of this book. It's not terrible but it's not even borderline original plot. This is basically a total ripoff of "The Strain" and it's vampires but less scary...but also I found it annoyingly written especially all the faith comments and increasing reference to god and his mysterious ways and how science was wrong. *** SPOILER WARNING ***Worst it was painfully predictable, every step of the way. The whole section with Elise screamed set up from the first second to anyone with a brain. The "what's the point section" with Kate was so ridiculously obvious too. As was the ending. And of course the hero's survive, the fact that nothing was written about Ted or Luke made it clear they were going to die. Why were there not silver knives for all? Why wasn't more sliver bullets made? Why not explore the simples from of vampire defence (UV) light for a start instead of 'surprise' with this saviour idea in the Green Room? How did the worlds power and the Internet go down entirely? I won't be reading the rest of the books.
I enjoyed this novel. My only beef is that repetition is over-used throughout. A real page turner.
