The Queen Of Kentucky (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

*Kentucky*This book was cute, I would probably recommend it to a young, impressionable girl. It kind of reminded me of mean girls, but in the South, where people say Hey y'all and work on tobacco farms. The main character in the story is 14 year old Ericka, who normally goes by Ricky Jo, but wants to change her image when starting high school. Ericka went to the Catholic school in her small hometown but is now going to the public high school where she will be new. She knows some people though, and her best friend is Luke, her neighbor who is very laid back and kind. Ericka is very naive and impressionable, but is not unlikable as a character. Even though there were several times in the story when I was like no, why are you doing that? I kind of understood that she did because she did not know any better. So anyway Ericka really wants to be in with the popular crowd and meets some cool girls in her home room that are cheerleaders and convince Ericka to try out. She makes JV and her friends are not very supportive because they all made varsity. Her friends are constantly insulting her and taking advantage of her and it is more relatable than frustrating, I just thought it was things you learn as you grow up and who your real friends are. There is also the biggest douche bag of a guy that all these girls have crushes on who goes by Wolf. He is so mean to Ericka the whole book but yet she falls for his crap every time and even ends up going to homecoming with him. It ends badly though when Wolf ditches Ericka for Mackenzie, one of Ericka's friends who just moved to Kentucky from Minnesota. But Mackenzie ends up ditching Wolf when he spanks her on the dance floor. Ericka also finds out that Luke is in the hospital for getting in a fight with his dad. Luke's dad had a drinking problem and would often hit his wife. Ericka finally realizes that the boy that she really cares about is Luke because he likes her for who she is. So there were some real issues in this book as well as stupid high school crap.Reading this book really took me back to my freshmen days in high school. It's awkward and you want to fit in and everything is new. I thought the author did a really good job capturing those moments and creating likable characters. This was a pretty good book, perfect for any teenage girl. I read this for book club and I would give it a 3.5 to 4. Although a little cheesey and kind of predictable, it was written very well. It had quite a bit of humor and made me laugh but it also touched on some serious topics. Queen of Kentucky was also very easy to relate to, since I'm going into high school this coming year. And, like any other teenager, she just wants to fit in. Overall, I liked this book.
