Higgins; a propósito de la publicación de su segunda novela lo incluí en este artículo; entonces ensalzaba su capacidad para crear diálogos y caracterizar personajes mediante ellos. No es que haya cambiado la forma de hacerlo en este “La rata en llamas” que nos trae Libros del asteroide; muy al contrario, todas sus virtudes siguen ahí, no hay más que echar un vistazo a este diálogo para darse cuenta, desternillante:“Me alegro, porque mi vida ha estado llena de malentendidos -afirmó Proctor-. Mi mujer no me comprende. Mi hijo, el que sigue en casa cuando no se ha escapado a no sé dónde, no me comprende. Yo no comprendo al cabrón de mi hijo, lo que igual tendrá algo que ver con que este año ya se haya largado de casa tres veces, y seguro que él no entiende por qué me empeño en traerlo de vuelta. Yo tampoco lo entiendo, como tampoco entiendo que el cabrón de mi hijo sea tan imbécil como para huir tres veces en siete meses y no conseguir buscarse un sitio donde no pueda encontrarlo.El chico es tonto del culo, eso es lo que es, y en lugar de seso tiene mierda en la mollera. Ha salido a su madre. Yo soy imbécil, pero te juro que podría irme de casa y perderme de vista, si quisiera. Me largué de casa a los veintitrés años, no te jode, y también me largué de la cárcel. Sé que era de media seguridad y que bastaba con saltar la alambrada a oscuras sin engancharse los pantalones, pero lo hice, no me rajé los pantalones y pasé catorce meses fuera. Y ahora ese crío me dice que yo tengo algo que ver con su llegada al mundo y que eso le hace infeliz, y miro a la gorda de mi mujer y sé que el crío tiene razón, aunque me parezca increíble, joder.Me parece increíble porque la miro y sé que nunca, estando en mis cabales, me follaría a un puto zepelín como ese.[...]“En apenas cincuenta páginas la interrelación de los personajes es tan divertida y dinámica como esta. Afortunadamente no se quedó ahí, el norteamericano quiso representar la realidad tal y como la veía; quizá ese sentido de verosimilitud se convierte en otro de sus sellos; dentro de lo que cabe, ya que todos sabemos que se trata de ficción, pero si adoptamos la premisa, entramos fácilmente en este aura, podemos ver por ejemplo cómo retrata a los banqueros:“Billy, ¿has visto alguna vez a uno de esos banqueros de pelo gris, trajes con chaleco, zapatos negros y gafas de montura metálica?¿Has hablado alguna vez con alguno? No viven en el mundo real, te lo juro. Lo que hacen es vivir en los bancos. Tienen sus mesas a la vista de todos y es ahí donde viven. Ni follan si se pelean ni ponen mala cara ni se lavan ni cagan ni se cambian los calzoncillos. Qué coño, todos los que pasan por la calle podrían verlos, también los tipos que ocupan las otras mesas de la alfombra roja, y al final entendí cómo lo hacen: contratan a gente que no hace nada de eso, para que no les haga falta hacerlo.”Si tuviera que elegir otra característica, sin duda sería la elección de personajes; paradigmas de lo que son los “losers”, perdedores de tomo y lomo que tienen que buscar negocios alternativos para intentar salir de la mediocridad en la que viven, tanto ellos como sus familias:“-De vamos a ver, nada. Esto no es un juego con polis que apuestan dinero del Monopoly, ¿vale? Esos tipos me conocen y creo que no les gusto. Me toman por un inútil, una mala influencia para la juventud. Me echan un vistazo y piensan que les gustaría verme con un traje a rayas, ¿comprendes? Y eso me pone nervioso, me pone nervioso porque esos tíos me pueden endosar las rayas si consiguen cogerme de los huevos y ahora mismo me los tienen bien cogidos y no veo a nadie capaz de hacer que me los suelten. Y eso me pone aún más nervioso.”Lo único que se echa en falta en esta ocasión es, curiosamente, el mal cuerpo que dejaban las anteriores entregas; en aquellas, la sensación de pesimismo era el carácter general, te dejaban desecho debido al grado de empatía que alcanzabas con los protagonistas; esta, publicada más tarde, es claramente más “suave”, si podemos usar esta palabra. El momento final supone la derrota de esos perdedores,; pero, sin duda, no es tan dramática, pierde intensidad. También contribuye a ello la elección, curiosa, por decirlo de alguna manera, de una trama donde seguros, fuego, fraude y ratas se convierten en una unión indisoluble a la par de estrambótica.Que siempre hace lo mismo es un hecho; que lo borda es otro hecho. I love character and dialogue driven plots so this one should be 5/5 and it actually was for the first third or so. But the whole setup takes way too long before some action finally kicks off and by then it loses a lot of its initial momentum. Also dialogs become repetitive, tedious and too long so at times it feels like you are stuck inside some endless monologues. It still works and plot sticks together but everything simply becomes a bit boring to be honest.Good and interesting stuff, but it feels more like an experiment than finished product. What do You think about The Rat On Fire (2015)?
Takes a bit of getting used to the style, in certain instances there are more than one conversation going on in a scene & the perspective shifts without warning & the first few times it happens it can be a little difficult to track who's who. Being a story concerning arson there isn't a lot in the way of action but that's more than made up for by the dense (almost convoluted but in a good way) dialogue exchanges which paint's the character quite vividly. I'd say 80 percent of the page length consists of dialogue & the lion's share of that is anecdotes. This takes a bit of getting used to (the anecdotes usually take a minute to get to their point) but it wonderfully paints the motivations as to why characters do what they do. I personally found the ending a bit underwhelming, though it did conform to the anecdotal nature of what had gone before. Stylised but with an underlying feeling of authenticity (the motivations of the very flawed central characters are suitably pedestrian to feel like something that could quite easily be lifted from a news story).

At first I was delighted again by the commitment to dialogue (it opens with a three page rant by a AG Investigator that tickled me pink). But so little happens in the book, the characters are not fleshed out very well, and the use of "nigger" was so incessant (as well as the attitudes within) (even though I was aware from a young age of how deeply racist Boston is and thus don't fault Higgins for portraying it), I tired quickly of it and therefore was pleased to reach the end, as disappointingly abrupt as that turned out to be.

So I'm not new to the fact that the only thing that interests GVH is the way people (mainly scumbags) talk. Of his stuff that I've read, 90% is dialogue. Rat on Fire retains that ratio, but ups the ante in a way - the entire book is building to a criminal event. After 150 pages, the event is about to take place in the following chapter - and the next chapter is describing ... the aftermath. He cares so little about action that he SKIPS IT ENTIRELY. Odd, but not really a problem - the book is still wholly entertaining. If you enjoy early Scorsese (& Goodfellas) for the feel of authenticity, or of being a fly on the wall while criminals talk, you should get on this right away. Caveat emptor, if you're new to GVH, you may not know the kind of characters you will be spending time with. Long story short: most of them are reprehensible human beings.
