In Malaya in 1948 Liz and her mother, under the military protection of Major Sturgess and a young guardsman, Alan, are returning to their colonial plantation. For a time the omnipresent jungle dominates their lives and Liz is torn between her love for Alan and her concern for her missing father. The country she loves so much is being destroyed and she no longer knows whom to trust.
