The Remake: As Time Goes By (1998) - Plot & Excerpts
This nouveau noir novel had all the elements of a very entertaining mystery, but somehow missed the boat for me.The teasers:. . . son of two glamorous movie stars rejects glamorous life to be a P.I;. . . Hollywood producer plans a tacky sequel to his parents' most famous movie and son intervenes:. . . mayhem follows.I didn't expect this book to be anything but good, retro, fun but it failed to deliver. The private eye doesn't have any illusions about the parents who put their careers over parenthood, but he is totally over-the-top concerned about the legacy of their most famous movie. His character just didn't add up for me: he was too flip and caustic, too insensitive to his own actions, and perhaps just not well developed enough by the author. I wanted to like both the character and the book, but it was a "miss" for me. The author's background (Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall's son) offers so much Hollywood history that perhaps with better editing or more writing experience the author could develope this series into something interesting. But, for now, he's lost me as a reader.
