We were stuck in traffic so the driver turned on the radio. “Let’s hear what Bin Laden’s been up to today,” he said, but all we got was an account of a traffic incident somewhere in the center of the city. A reporter was out on the street getting eyewitness statements from market traders and passers-by. It seems someone had driven a car through a pedestrianized street at sixty miles an hour, sending shoppers and stallholders diving for their lives and injuring more than a dozen people. Amazingly, there were no fatalities. What was it like? enquired the reporter of a woman who ran a flower stall. There was a brief pause as she considered her reply. “ ’Twas like Hillstreetfuckinblues.” I’m in Dublin for the Ireland v. England Rugby International on Saturday. I’ve come because I don’t know whom to support, and I’m hoping being there may help me find out. At the moment I’m only short of two things to make sure it’s a great weekend: somewhere to stay, and a ticket for the match.
