“Hey Ari, you didn’t come home last night. Where were you?” Kayla asked as I sat beside her. “Just hanging out with Clay,” I shrugged, side stepping the question. I knew he would be upset if I revealed his secret tree house. Not that I particularly cared about his feelings right now when his own regard for my feelings were non-existent, but I kept my mouth shut out of respect for Brody. “We would have left with you, but you ran off so fast and Clay asked us to hang back.” Morgan said to ensure that I knew they were concerned about me, and I gave her an appreciative smile. Right on cue, Clay walked into the room and only looked in our direction to give a nod to Grant. I crossed my arms and slumped back in my seat. Clay found his mother and father at the front of the room and sat beside them. The defense meetings were held in the same building as the Witch Council meetings. King Bryan normally led them, but today he sat in the pew, an indication that he was especially unwell this morning. Since I had no training in this yet and would be leaving soon anyway, Jeremy’s father William appeared to be the stand in for King Bryan. As I watched him confidently walk to the podium, he seemed to be very pleased to be up there in my rightful place.
